At Fire Aid, we are committed to staying at the forefront of maritime safety and ensuring our students receive training that is up to date.
A significant update arrived in 2026. Following the IMO Resolution MSC. 560(108), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has released MIN 729 (M)+(F). This document outlines critical amendments to the Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) module, which is a core component of the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) framework.
What has changed?
As of 1st January 2026, the PSSR course has been expanded to address a vital area of shipboard life: the human element. The updated syllabus now includes mandatory training on:
- Preventing and responding to violence and harassment, including bullying and sexual harassment.
- Understanding the impact of these behaviours on individual well-being and overall ship safety.
- Reporting and intervention procedures, ensuring every seafarer knows how to foster a safe, respectful, and professional working environment.
The goal of this amendment is clear: to ensure that the maritime industry is a safe place for everyone, where dignity and respect are fundamental to operational safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to retake the STCW PSSR course because of the 2026 update?
No, you are not required to retake the course. The MCA’s MIN 729 (M)+(F) states that the updated syllabus only applies to new PSSR training delivered from 1st January 2026 onwards. If you already hold a valid STCW PSSR certificate, it remains compliant and does not need to be refreshed or replaced.
What is the new PSSR 2026 amendment?
The 2026 amendment to the PSSR (Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities) module adds mandatory training on preventing and responding to violence and harassment, including sexual harassment and bullying. This update ensures all seafarers are equipped to maintain a safe and respectful working environment onboard.
My company wants me to do the updated course to meet the new criteria, how can I do this?
The short answer is that there is no “refresher” version of the Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) course; to meet the new 2026 STCW criteria, you must retake the full course. We run this as a half day morning session. Find our upcoming dates.
