Shipboard Safety Officer

Prerequisites

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • At least 12 months sea service.
  • Served at sea on a merchant vessel
  • Minimum 2 years consecutive sea service since attaining the age of 18.
  • In the case of a safety officer on board a tanker, this shall include at least six months service in such a ship.

Course Information

This course is required for anyone taking up the role of a Safety Officer on board a ship, as defined in The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997 (SI 1997 No. 2962) (the Regulations), which define a safety officer as “a person who has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and/or qualities, to enable him / her to properly undertake the duty imposed under the relevant provision in the regulations”.

Through a hands-on practical training program, including lectures, videos, group discussion, and practical scenario based exercises, students will acquire a clear understanding of;

  • The duties of a Shipboard Safety Officer
  • The legislative information relevant to their role
  • ISM code, its relationship to their role within the Safety Management System
  • Incident prevention and investigation including techniques to conduct interviews
  • Correct procedures to identify hazards & conduct risk assessments & mitigate risks
  • The significance of inspections and audits
  • Record keeping, reporting incidents and accidents
  • The role of safety committees in shipboard safety
  • Creation of safety culture onboard ships
